ROLE OF MENTORING IN AN ORGANISATION

Mentoring in a nutshell is helping another person to develop. The mentoring concept in an organisational context is an important development tool for both the employee (the mentee) and the person giving the support (the mentor). This is an important tool that is very popular nowadays in the west.

Why mentoring is a popular performance enhancing tool?

● It paves way to a faster career progress for the employee

● Excellent value for money for the organisation as the financial cost involved is relatively small

● It enhances the company image. Organisations do not want to be associated with a poor turnover record and therefore encouraging learning helps staff to achieve their full potential and thus not look for employment elsewhere

● This can preserve the well - being of employees, improve employee morale, trust and motivation.

Who is a mentor?

A mentor should be someone who:

● Can give practical support and advice

● Can give technical, ethical and general business guidance

● Can help with the development of interpersonal and work skills of the employees

● Is an impartial sounding board (mentee would generally have no direct reporting responsibility to the mentor)

● Is a good guide and counsellor

● Is a role model who can help improve career progress

For a mentoring system to be successful, the relationship should be a one of mutual trust and not be based on authority but rather a genuine wish by the mentors to share knowledge, advice and experience.

Mentoring also works in parallel to more formal control mechanisms such as appraisal, and is intended to provide the employee with a forum to discuss development issues.

A mentoring system has both career - enhancing and psychological functions. The career function is concerned primarily with enhancing career advancement through exposure. The psychological function is more concerned with aspects of the relationship that enhance competence and effectiveness in management roles.

Mentoring is a relaxed and supportive process in a safe environment where employees can admit gaps in their knowledge and skills, raise queries and consider their strenghts. Thus mentoring plays a valuable role in an organisation in enhancing performance of the employees and mentors getting a unique opportunity to give something to the organisation while enjoying a fresh challenge and a professional development of their own.

  1. I believe you have captured all the advantages of Mentoring for both the organization and the employees. Mentoring will create a sentimental bond between the mentor and the mentee that will lay the foundation for loyalty,

  2. as per your content i trust, mentoring prorams support in employee retention and shaping organizational culture, which aligns with talent management strategy. Identifying any disparities such as, poor mentor/mentee matches and insufficient training at the beginning may ensure successful and enduring mentoring.

  3. I think mentoring happen in every organization naturally/informally. The problem is that informal mentoring is often accessible only one employee in our wok context therefor its benefits are limited.
